uOttawa and Shanghai Jiaotong To Launch New Joint Med Program
The University of Ottawa and the Shanghai Jiaotong School of Medicine (SJTUSM) recently announced the first Chinese-Canadian joint medicine program. An introductory program is scheduled to begin next fall, preparing around 30 Chinese students for the four-year MD program, which will then start in 2016.
Students will be taught by professors from both the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine and SJTUSM, a leading medical school in China. Students will complete most of their hospital studies at Renji Hospital in Shanghai, the first western-style hospital in Shanghai, established in 1844.
The partnership will include exchanges and collaborative research projects, with the University of Ottawa and SJTUSM each committing US$1 million to research in medicine and medical education innovation. The two universities are also in the process of developing residency programs in family medicine to address growing demand in China.
