UK – the No.1 Preferred Studying Destination for Chinese Students
While the British Council estimated 12% of Chinese students would cancel their plan to study in the UK in July, most Chinese agency surveys revealed the UK has surpassed the US in becoming the No. 1 preferred destination for Chinese students studying abroad in 2020.
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) released their figure in July: 24,000 mainland Chinese applied to study at an undergraduate level through UCAS in 2020, doubling its figure in 2016 and a 23% increase compared to 2019. The UK has also announced the re-installation of the Post-Study-Work (PSW) visa policy for 2021 (cancelled in 2012) to offer a 2 years post-study work option. The offer rates to mainland Chinese applicants has also increased by 14% compared to the same period last year. In the UK today, Chinese students make up 34% of the total non-EU international students. Many agents believe the UK is benefiting from the number of students who switched from their original study destinations such as the US and Australia due to the border constraints and the escalated bilateral relationships.
