China Higher EdUK Signs Education Deals in China
During UK PM Teresa May’s 3 day visit to China in January, £550m worth of education deals were signed, including an extension of a program that sees 200 UK maths teachers trained in China, training of pre-school and English language staff, and further information exchange in the VET sector. In addition, starting in autumn 2018, 8,000 UK primary schools will be using the Shanghai Maths Textbook (English version).
Prior to the PM’s visit, the British Council held the first Sino-education achievements exhibition in Shanghai, showcasing the arts, design, and STEM streams, as well as a display of Sino-UK joint programs and career sessions chaired by successful Chinese alumni. The Chinese Ambassador to the UK, LIU Xiaoming, also hosted a special Sino-UK education Chinese New Year event with 200 guests in attendance.
Ms May’s delegates included British Education Supplier Association (BESA), UK Skills, the University of Manchester, Universities UK, pre-education chain Busy Bee, and Cambridge S&T Park. Despite the UK’s overall growth in international students remaining stagnant, it claimed a 17% growth from China last year.
