New Technical Skills-Based Program For Gaokao
Lu Xin, China’s vice-minister of education, announced on Saturday that China is set to introduce a new technical skills-based program for the Gaokao, according to China Daily. The MOE will introduce the alternative model in addition to the existing academic exam, with high school students able to choose which test they sit according to personal preferences. The new technical exam is aimed at prospective students looking to pursue a career in areas such as engineering and mechanics, and will assess candidates’ technical skills and textbook knowledge. Currently, Chinese high school students can only choose majors after passing a uniform Gaokao, potentially disadvantaging students skilled in technical fields but less adept at sitting exams. Lu noted that the new system was approved during the executive conference of the State Council in February, with further details of changes to be released soon.
