Joint Innovation Institute Established in Shenzhen
Hong Kong S&T University and Shenzhen University have recently signed an MoU to establish a joint “Innovation Institute” in Shenzhen’s Dawan District. This Joint Institute will focus on “entrepreneurial education”.
Shenzhen, already home to 13 universities, is a popular choice for Chinese campuses of Joint Institutes. The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Shenzhen campus has recently had its first cohort of undergraduate students graduate (271 students in total) since its establishment in 2014. Hong Kong Baptist University/Beijing Normal University have also established campuses in Shenzhen, and a few others have also been involved in deep discussions, but campus constructions didn’t take off as planned. These include, Jilin University and the University of Queensland (Australia), Guangzhou TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) University and RMIT (Australia), Hunan University and the Rochester University of Technology (USA). Beijing S&T University and Moscow University announced their joint institute back in 2014, and finally succeeded in recruiting a small cohort of 115 students in 2017. Shenzhen is aiming to establish another 7 universities within the next 8 years.
