Google Launches AI Centre in Beijing
Google’s official withdrawal from China seven years ago never really stopped its operations in China; it maintained a 600-staff team within its two representative offices, and has recently moved to a new 6,000m2 office in Beijing. Half of Google’s China-based staff has been engaged in selling advertisements to assist the internationalization of mainland China clients.
The recently-announced Google AI Centre will be headed up by two female Chinese scientists currently stationed in the US: Dr. LI Feifei, Director of Stanford University’s AI Lab and Computer Vision Lab, and Dr. LI Jia, Chief Scientist of Google Cloud. It is likely that the main reason for establishing this centre in China is to tap into China’s AI talent pool.
