Fund to Support Doctors in Residency at West China Hospital

The well-known anesthetist, Professor LIU Ji of Sichuan University’s Huaxi Clinical Medicine School, donated RMB100m (US$15m) to the university to establish a fund for doctors in residency at Huaxi Affiliated Hospital (West China Hospital). LIU originally received this large sum of money as a reward for his personal contribution to IP commercialization.

12.7% of China’s anesthesia related patents are held by LIU and his team. 80% of anesthesia research in I-III phase is conducted through Huaxi. Huaxi Medical School was founded by Canadian Methodist Missionaries at the end of the 19th century. It has a global network of Chinese and international alumni. Part of Professor LIU’s donation will be allocated to resident doctors so they can spend some of their residencies abroad.
