Boom in Young Chinese Students Studying Abroad
Despite the many issues that young Chinese students studying abroad experience, it is estimated that over 40,000 are currently studying in secondary schools in the US, which is an annual growth of almost 500% over the last 10 years. A number of large student recruitment agents offer “guaranteed packages” to enter the top 100 universities in the US. These packages require a service fee of approximately USD15K and include language training, a parental club and consultations. Some agents are now receiving in excess of 40% commission from students studying abroad who are under 18, whereas in the past, this figure would not have exceeded 10%. After several instances of younger students committing criminal offences in the US and receiving severe sentences, the MoE, regional Education Bureaus, and prominent service providers, such as CSCSE and CEAIE, are urging the public to take extra precautions when selecting pre-departure training programs and on-going support mechanisms.
