TenCent Founders Donate USD 51m

It was recently revealed that four of TenCent’s founders, who all graduated from Shenzhen University in 1989, MA Huateng, ZHANG Zhidong, CHEN Yidan, and XU Chenhu, have jointly donated RMB 350m (USD 51m) to their alma mater since 2008. Mr Ma, CEO of TenCent, has donated RMB 200m (USD 29m) alone. These funds are being used by the university to attract R&D talent, as well as for study abroad programs.

 

Other recent alma mater donations by Chinese entrepreneurs include those from Xiaomi founder, LEI Jun, who donated USD 15m to Wuhan University, MA Dongmin, the spouse and special assistant to Baidu President LI Yanhong, who donated USD15m to the University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei), and LI Dong, President of Lvke Group (Agricultural), who donated USD 15m to the same alma mater. In addition to these, LIAO Qingqing, Shenzhen Xinlitai Pharmaceutical Company donated USD 7m to East China University of Science & Technology, and SHUM Chiu Hung, together with his wife LI Yi Ping, of the Guangzhou Times Real Estate Development Company, donated USD 15m to Sun Yat-sen University.
