Guangdong Faces Severe VET Teacher Shortage

Guangdong Province is expecting an enrolment of 2.3 million VET students by 2020 and according to the MOE’s required teacher-to-student ratio of 1:20, 110,000 VET teachers are required. This translates to a shortage of close to 40,000 teachers. More streamlined training systems have been planned including securing high-school students keen on a career in teaching and putting them through a fast-track system to obtain diplomas and bachelor degrees.

Women make up approximately 80% of VET teachers; many are willing to have a 2nd child after China relaxed its one-child policy in 2016 which places extra pressure on teaching capacity. The Guangdong government plans to establish hundreds of VET teaching bases as well as calling on part-time teachers for assistance, and has already established a VET teacher training alliance involving 95 universities.
