China invests with an aim to take its universities’ rankings

The Chinese Ministry of Education has announced a massive government investment, coined “World Class 2.0,” to pair Chinese universities with international Ivy League colleges. The scheme plans to create international cooperation hubs with elite foreign universities in projects both on and off campus. Although the size of the investment remains undisclosed, several provinces such as Shanghai and Guangdong have already implemented hubs with a reported USD500 million government investment over three years to improve their research performance and world university rankings.
