Taiwan aims to become center for Chinese studies

Taiwanese President, Ma Ying-jeou is leading a campaign to position Taiwan as a center for the study of both traditional Chinese characters (used currently in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) and simplified Chinese characters (used currently in Mainland China and Singapore) for both international and Mainland Chinese students. Taiwan has received growing numbers of students from outside the region in recent years, owing largely to the Taiwan Fellowship and Scholarship Program. This program offers study and research grants to around 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as researchers visiting Taiwan.
